Sheets fitted

Restless nights. Interrupted sleep. Welcoming a new baby is an exciting, joy-filled but also often stressful experience — and ensuring that the new bundle has a good night’s sleep is a priority. While most new parents consider the type and size of the cot, whether to co-sleep and whether to use a baby breathing monitor at night, few consider how the quality of crib sheet might impact on a baby’s sleep.

Pure cotton is often the most appropriate choice for crib sheets, especially in warmer climates, although polyester, flannel and other natural fiber options can also work. While you might associate thread counts with fancy hotels or celebrity mansions, considering the thread count of your baby’s crib sheets is important. Thread count refers to how many threads are woven into one square inch, both horizontally and vertically. Vertical threading is called warp, while horizontal threading is called weft.

Thread count can be increased by weaving in extra threads. Thread counts can vary from under 200 — usually not recommended — to 800 and above. Durable linens are usual made from percale, a type of cotton with a thread count between 200 and 800. Lighter sheets, which might be a good choice for baby, are around 400, while 800 thread count options tend to be dense but soft. The denser weave of percale means it is less likely to pill than cotton satin.

It is also important to ensure that you know the baby crib sheet size needed. Standard size crib sheets are usually 51 5/8 inches long by 27 1/4 inches wide by 5 1/2 inches thick, but they can vary in size and may not match your mattress or crib size. A good fit is essential for crib safety too, so knowing the baby crib sheet size for the crib you have is crucial.

Babies with sensitive skin might require more consideration in terms of their sleeping linen. Hypoallergenic waterproof mattress protectors, protective pillowcases and sheets and other variations are widely available to ensure that materials do not irritate the skin or cause other issues.

By considering the crib sheet material, size and other attributes you could make a difference in ensuring your baby — and you — get better quality sleep and minimize potential annoyances.
