Most people wish they could just get more sleep. Despite the National Sleep Foundation’s recommendations that people get between seven and nine hours, not many people can do that. More than 91% of American adults say they wake up at least once during the night and 43% of people between the ages of 13 and 64 say they just cannot get enough sleep on weeknights. For many people, sleeping on an adjustable mattress can be the thing that helps them get to sleep.

There are definite health benefits to sleeping on an adjustable mattress. In the first place, insomnia can have serious health consequences. It has been linked to a number of health problems such as heart disease, heart attack, heart failure, an irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure and stroke. It has been reported that at least 90% of people who suffer from insomnia also have another medical condition.

People who are only able to get six hours of sleep or less a night have a 30% higher chance of becoming obese than people who get the full seven to nine hours they are recommended to get. Additionally, people who do not get enough sleep end up craving high sugar and high fat foods more than people who sleep enough.

People who suffer from insomnia are also more likely to suffer from depression. A Sleep in America poll conducted in 2005 found that people who sleep less than six hours a night also have anxiety or depression. Another study from 2007 discovered that people who have to deal with the sleep disorder are up to five times as likely to experience some form of depression. Insomnia may even be one of the first signs of the psychological disorder. The two, depression and insomnia end up making each other worse.

Getting a good night sleep is incredibly important to the American economy. It has been estimated that nearly $63 billion is lost every year to a loss of productivity that is caused by insomnia. People who cannot sleep simply cannot perform as well on the job. In addition to that, they are more likely to take sick days and miss work.
